Chapter 6 Summary

After connecting to Internet through your Internet Service Provider
(ISP), select the start icon on the desktop of your windows machine, then
at the run command type the rvcc2.raritanval.edu (the Web Server for
your class) as shown below, then hit the enter key.


Now enter your user/login name: the first letter of your first
name followed by the first three charecters of your last name and then last 4
digits of your G number, all in small letters. When
prompted to enter your login password, type your G Number including the
letter upper case G. The password does not appear on the screen. When
prompted to select a new password, select password that's at least six
characters in length and comprising of letters and numeric digits. I often recommend
students to use their first and last initials followed by year of birth.
ms1975, for example is Mary Smith's password. When asked to reenter the
password do that. If you are successfully logged on you should see a $
prompt.
If you type anything incorrectly on a UNIX machine, the delete
character is, CTRL and Backspace together. To delete the entire text you
typed press CTRL and U.
Type pine at the $ prompt as shown below:
$pine
After logging on to pine your initial screen should look similar to what is shown below:

To compose an e-mail message, select compose option or type letter "c". Your screen now should be something similar to what is shown below. Note that this sample includes my signature file.

Now type the recipient's e-mail address and the carbon copy address, then fill up the subject area with a pertinent header for your message. Then type your message, spell check it by hitting CTRL and T keys together. Your screen now should look similar to what you see below.

When you are ready to send the message press CTRL and X keys together.
To attach a file that you may have in your UNIX directory, after you have composed a brief message and entered the recipient's e-mail address, go to the attachment area, then press CTRL & J keys together. Your screen now should look like:

Now select the folder list and the appropriate message to attach, your screen should look like:

When prompted to enter a comment, type an appropriate header related message. Now you are ready to send the message with an attachment.
Assuming that you have moved the messages from your inbox to a folder by using the command "s" repeatedly, do the following to send this folder to your instructor.
Start the pine e-mail program, then compose the message then go to attach area then press CTRL & J keys together. Next press CTRL and T keys together. Now select the mail folder then look for the folder name in which you saved your messages. After writing an appropriate comment and filling up the subject line and the message area, press CTRL and X keys together to send the message and the folder.
At the rvcc or $ prompt, type "pico" as shown below to invoke the text editor pico.

Now you are in the pico editor program. After typing your file spell check it by using CTRL and T keys. Then Press CTRL and O keys together to save the file, at the prompt file name to save just hit enter. Pressing CTRL & X together exits the pico editor. The screen below shows the use of pico editor to create a signature file that is automatically append to my e-mail messages.
A plan file is used to contain information about your weekly or semester plans. For example in my plan file I have added my office hours for the semester. One could add information about contact numbers while he/she is on vacation, etc., so the company work goes on.
At the rvcc> prompt type pico .plan as shown below:

Now create the plan file using the pico editor then save the plan file by pressing CTRL and O keys together.
Your sample plan file could be as follows:

Now change the .plan file status as follows:

When somebody checks to see your whereabouts by using a the UNIX finger
command, the information in your plan file will be displayed as follows,
for example.
From the Pine e-mail main menu select option A as shown below and hit enter.

Now type @ sign as shown below to add names to address/distribution list.

Now enter the word class at the nick name, and Internet Class at Full
name, and e-mail addresses on the address line as shown below. Type just the login names one after the
other separated by commas. If these are non-rvcc e-mail addresses type
complete e-mail address--login name@host address for each person in the
distribution list.

When you are done creating the distribution list save it by pressing CTRL and X keys together.
Now select compose mode of Pine e-mail, now type the word class, the
nick name we used before for our distribution list at To, Your screen
looks as follows:

Now if you hit the enter key all the e-mail address in the distribution list will be added automatically. Your screen should look as follows:

After you done typing the message send it as usual.
