Instructional Design Center

Instructional Design Center Logo: Need - Analysis - Design - Development - Evaluation - Implementation

Raritan Valley Community College places a prime emphasis on teaching and learning. The Instructional Design Center is a resource which works with the faculty to improve teaching and learning through the effective use of technology. Students will find that their learning experiences are more dynamic and more substantial as a result of the partnership between the faculty and the Instructional Design Center.

What is Instructional Design?

The term instructional design refers to the systematic process of translating principles of learning and instruction into plans for instructional materials and activities.

Smith & Ragan, Instructional Design, 1993

Instructional Designers can assist faculty in designing procedures and processes to teach specific concepts. These procedures are based on theories of communication, learning, and instruction to meet a wide variety of student needs. Instructional Design Models are used to plan consistent, repeatable instruction that is effective, efficient, and appealing. After the plans are complete, designers may translate their specifications into the final instructional materials. The type of materials produced are based on the specific instructional needs.

What is the RVCC Instructional Design Center?

The RVCC Instructional Design Center serves as a resource for teaching and learning using current and emerging technology. It is a part of the Instructional Design and Technology department, located on the lower level of the library. The Center includes a hands-on area where RVCC faculty can preview learning packages, learn about software and hardware, and work on projects. Three faculty workstations are equipped with multimedia Pentium computers, a scanner, videodisc player, and VCR. The IDC also includes a resource area where a variety of software packages, resource files, and discipline specific multimedia catalogs are available for faculty use.

The overall mission of the Instructional Design Center is to help faculty integrate instructional technology into the curriculum. This is being accomplished by providing information and training on courseware and technology and creating new courseware when appropriate. Services include instructional design and multimedia courseware development as well as arranging for their use.
