  2. Catalog Description
  3. A survey course designed to serve the needs of Liberal Arts Majors. Topics include Systems of Numerations, Problem Solving, Sets and Logic, Probability and Statistics, and the Development of the Real Number System. Satisfies mathematical requirements for the Liberal Arts Majors, but not for students in Science, Mathematics, or Business Administration Programs.
  4. Place of Course in College Curriculum
    1. Satisfies the mathematical requirements for certain Liberal Arts Programs
    2. Elective
  5. Student's Learning Outcomes
  6. This course is designed to provide students with a background into the structure and development of our number system. It is structured to provide an alternative view of mathematics, different than the students traditionally have of computation and/or algebra. There are many real life situations which at first do not appear mathematical in nature and yet are directly related to mathematical topics. Studying these topics should help students understand the role mathematics can play outside the classroom.
  7. Text and technology
    1. The required text for this course is: A Survey of Mathematics with Applications by Angel and Porter, Sixth Edition
    2. Optional: Student Study Guide and Solution Manual
    3. A scientific calculator is necessary. It should have a factorial key(!) and a permutation and combination key. Statistics keys are helpful. You will have free use of a calculator.
