    7. Prerequisites: Precalculus II, Foundations of Calculus, or College Algebra and Trigonometry or a score on the placement test.

  2. Catalog Description
    This is a one semester course in Calculus as applied to business, economics, the behavioral sciences, the social sciences, and biology. Topics include the study of the basic principles of limits; continuity; derivatives of algebraic, exponential and logarithmic functions; antiderivatives; the integrals; and applications of the integral.

  3. Place of Course in College Curriculum
    This course satisfies the general education requirements in mathematics.

  4. Text and Technology
    1. The required text for this course is: Calculus Applications and Technology for business, and social and life sciences by E. C. Tomastik, 2nd edition.
    2. A graphical calculator is required.(TI83 strongly recommended)

  5. We will cover the following material
    1. Chapter 1 Functions
    2. Chapter 2 Limits and Derivatives
    3. Chapter 3 Rules for the Derivative
    4. Chapter 4 Curve sketching and Optimization
    5. Chapter 5 Integration
    6. Chapter 6 Additional Topics in Integration

  6. Grades will be based on the following:
    1. Three Test worth 100 points each
      1. Chapter 1 and 2
      2. Chapter 3 and 4
      3. Chapter 5 and 6
    2. Three Quizzes 40 - 30 - 30 points
    3. Group work and assignments. 100 points
    4. Project 100 points
    5. Final Examination 200 points

  7. Grading:
    1. 100% - 90% A
    2. 89% - 86% B+
    3. 85% - 80% B
    4. 79% - 76% C+
    5. 75% - 70% C
    6. 69% - 60% D
    7. less than 60% points F

  8. Hints for Success
    1. Have a positive attitude.
    2. Prepare for and attend class.
    3. Do recommended assignments. One to two hours of study time should be spent outside of class for every hour in class.
    4. Attendance in class is of paramount importance. We shall follow the rules of the college. Attending all lectures is essential for success in this course. Lectures reinforce and explain concepts presented in the text.
    5. Be on time for all classes. Chronic lateness will not be tolerated. Late arrivals are disruptive to the class atmosphere.

  9. If you miss a quiz or an exam, a make-up exam is not automatic. It is my decision whether you have a valid reason for your absence. Please contact me the day of the test or quiz indicating the reason for your absence and upon your return provide third party documentaion to support your circumstances,

  10. I'm available for extra help during my office hours. Tutors are available in the math lab.
